Mental health wellness practices is best implemented early in child development. As a middle school educator of fours years and a former college professor, I blend my knowledge and expertise of quality life skills, education, and mental health wellness to offer a positive life skills curriculum.
The Inspiration: My Personal Story
The inspiration behind these cards is rooted in my personal struggle to teach my child the value and importance of boundaries, respect, accountability, and personal space.
Can I share a personal story with you? One day I prayed to God to help me find a way to teach my son how to navigate his relationships with friends better. God whispered in my heart, "the way you teach him math, and english, you can teach him life lessons." This was an "aha" moment of a lifetime. It made sense-we spend so much time teaching our children school based material like math, science, and history but we do not take the time to teach them healthy life principles and practices.
I began doing life lessons at home with my son. I created flashcards to define words such as: boundaries, accountability, and consent. My son learned best with short definitions and simplistic language along with role play and examples of each word. I realized during our time together, that he was learning to express himself better and he was opening up about things he was experiencing at school. This new found awareness gave me hope that the more I taught him about life, the better he'd be at navigating his big feelings and expressing his emotions effectively. More importantly, I wanted him to learn the power in healthy emotion regulation. To further ensure his understanding of this new language, I implemented Bible verses associated with each word. This allowed him to see how the Bible supports what he is learning and actively working to implement.
I also found that many children benefit from visualization, repetition, and relatability. These flashcards can help children open up about events that happen at school or with their friends in other contexts, that parents did not initially know about. Sometimes children learn a new word and it is likened unto a light bulb going off in their minds about a situation they experienced. Learning mental health terms empowers children to identify their feelings and experiences. This is a skill many adults are still learning, how powerful would it be if your child was navigating these life skills already?
Your child deserves the language that helps them protect themselves, speak up for themselves, and implement boundaries. Your child can be empowered to use their words powerfully. I am proud of you for considering this for your child. I pray it unlocks a greater level of awareness for your little one.
